Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen

Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen (born September 6, 1946 in Flensburg ) is a German physician and professor of geriatrics at the Charité University Hospital , Berlin . She has been a member of the German Ethics Council since 2012 .

Professional background

After graduating from high school in the natural sciences in 1966, Steinhagen-Thiessen initially studied physics and chemistry in Marburg , but switched to human medicine the following year. After the state examination, she completed her assistantship at the Hamburg University Hospital Eppendorf , where she was employed as a scientific assistant at the Physiological-Chemical Institute after obtaining her license to practice medicine .

In 1978 she received her doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the University of Marburg . In 1979 Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen was a DFG research fellow at the Technical University of Israel in Haifa , where she conducted research on the subject of Biology of Aging . From 1979 to 1987 Steinhagen-Thiessen worked as a scientific assistant at the Medical Core Clinic and Polyclinic Hamburg-Eppendorf, until after her habilitation in 1985 and after her first teaching assignments in the field of gerontology and clinical geriatrics in 1987 she became a senior physician in the Albertinenhaus, a model and day clinic for geriatrics and rehabilitation in Hamburg.

From October 1987 to 1996 Steinhagen-Thiessen worked as a C3 professor at the Virchow Clinic in Berlin as head of the lipid clinic and nutritional medicine in the interdisciplinary metabolism center at the Berlin University Clinic. At the same time, Steinhagen-Thiessen was the chief physician of geriatrics at the Max-Bürger Hospital in Berlin as part of a cooperation agreement with the Charité . In 1997 she was finally appointed to a C4 professorship in the field of internal medicine / geriatrics at the Medical Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

From 1995 to 2014 she was the medical director of the Evangelical Geriatric Center Berlin (EGZB) gGmbH and from 1996 to 2014 she was the director of the Senior Citizens' University of the Charité. Steinhagen-Thiessen is also active on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals and also acts as co-editor of the journals Geriatrie-Praxis and Klinik & Research . In 2014 she retired from the Evangelical Geriatric Center Berlin (EGZB) gGmbH.

Steinhagen-Thiessen is married to Lothar Diabo and has a daughter.

Memberships and honors

Elisabeth Steinhagen-Thiessen is a member of a large number of scientific specialist societies, for example in the German Society for Gerontology since 1979 and in the Professional Association of German Internists since 1984 . In many cases she has been involved in the board of directors or the scientific advisory board of these professional associations. She is the chairman of the Federal Association of Clinical-Geriatric Institutions

Steinhagen-Thiessen has also been a member of the Advisory Board for Health Care at the Federal Ministry of Health since 1995, and a member of the Expert Commission for the report on the elderly on the situation of the older generation in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1998 . In 2012 she was appointed to the German Ethics Council on the proposal of the Union parliamentary group.

Steinhagen-Thiessen also managed numerous joint medical projects, including the so-called Berlin Aging Study I and II (BASE, with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development Berlin).

She has received several awards, including the GE Konjetzny Prize in 1979 , the GA Martini Prize in 1982 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2016 .
