Elisabeth Thalmann , also Beth Thalmann (born April 11, 1918 in Zurich ; † February 3, 2000 there ) was a Swiss artist who worked with painting , murals, collages , ink drawings and object art .

life and work

Elisabeth Thalmann came from a host family. Her father was a chef in large hotels and, as a guild host, ran the Zunfthaus zur Waag in Zurich. She was born in the «Waag» and grew up in Zurich.

She attended the arts and crafts school in Zurich for five years and graduated from Otto Morach with an exceptional certificate. She obtained a diploma as a draftsman and designer. In addition to the compulsory specialist lessons, drawing and designing for textiles, she has been involved in designing decorations for ceramics, shop windows, exhibition stands, wall decorations, decorations for festive occasions.

In the final report , the subject teacher O. Morach mentioned: "In my 24 years as a teacher for decorative design at the arts and crafts department of the Zurich Trade School, I only very rarely had a student with such a good sense of color as Miss Thalmann has."

In 1938 she was studying in Rome. In 1942 she was an intern at E. Gubler and also worked as an embroidery draftsman. 1949–1951 she was taught in Paris at the academies of André Lhote and Fernand Léger and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . She took courses with Oskar Dalvit in Zurich. She received scholarships from the City of Zurich in 1957 and from the Füllemann Foundation in 1956. She also received a third prize for designing a wall decoration in the town hall of Aarau and a second prize in a poster competition within the GSMBK .

Exhibitions

Elisabeth Thalmann's works have been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries in Zurich (BENO, 1959, 1962/1963, 1969), Basel (Hilt, 1966), Vienna (Foitl, 1970) a. a., 1992 Celtic cellar,

She was represented in group exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich (1961, 1967, 1968, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1989), the Helmhaus Zürich (1951, 1956–1959, 1966, 1990), and the Kunstmuseum Bern (1964). In September 1964 she took part in the Vernissage des peintres zurichois on the occasion of Expo 64 in Lausanne. In France she had individual and group exhibitions from 1972, mainly in and around Rouen (Normandy).
