Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger (* 1957 as Elisabeth Fisslberger in Vienna ) is an Austrian lawyer and diplomat. She has been the Permanent Representative of her country to the United Nations Office in Geneva since December 2017 and was elected President of the UN Human Rights Council in December 2019 .

education

Elisabeth Tichy-Fisslberger studied after completion of the AHS from 1976 to 1980 at the University of Vienna Jus and completed in parallel an interpreter - and translation studies for French and Spanish . In 1981 she studied international law on a scholarship at the Belgian University of Louvain-la-Neuve . She is Dr.iur. and Mag.phil.

Career

From 1982 to 1988 she worked for the European Commission (EC) in Brussels , where she worked as a simultaneous interpreter . In 1988 she moved to the Austrian Foreign Ministry (today: BMeiA), initially in the economic and European policy section. In 1990 she worked in the Austrian embassy in Dublin , in 1992 in the Austrian embassy in London , from 1993 to 2000 in the Austrian representation to the EU in Brussels , where she participated in the Austrian EU accession negotiations in 1993/94 and in 1998 in the first Austrian EU Council Presidency played important roles. In 2000 she took over the management of the department for EU policy and institutional issues in the Austrian Foreign Ministry, became deputy head of Section III (economic and European policy) in 2003 and head of Section IV (legal and consular matters) in 2007. Since 2009 she has also been the Austrian coordinator for combating human trafficking. In December 2017, Tichy-Fisslberger became the permanent representative of Austria at the United Nations Office in Geneva. On December 6, 2019, the UN Human Rights Council elected Tichy-Fisslberger as its President for 2020. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg saw this as recognition for Austria's international efforts in the field of human rights.

Other fields of activity

Tichy-Fisslberger has been a lecturer at the Diplomatic Academy Vienna since 2003, and from 2005 to 2017 she also taught at the University of Vienna. She is a member of the International Gender Champions network , which advocates gender equality in international organizations.

Private

She is married to the Austrian diplomat Helmut Tichy and has one daughter.
