Elisabeth Vreede (1920s)

Elisabeth Vreede (born July 16, 1879 in The Hague , † August 31, 1943 in Ascona ) was a Dutch mathematician , astronomer and anthroposophist . From 1925 to 1935 she was a member of the board of the General Anthroposophical Society .

Life

Elisabeth Vreede came into contact with theosophy at home . She became interested in the starry sky early on, read the works of Camille Flammarion and learned French in the process. She studied mathematics, astronomy and philosophy at the University of Leiden . After graduating in 1906, she gave mathematics lessons at a girls' college until 1910.

From 1910 she lived in Berlin , worked on her (incomplete) dissertation and at times as Rudolf Steiner's secretary . In 1914 she moved to Dornach to help build the first Goetheanum . During the war years, she helped care for prisoners of war in Berlin.

After the end of the war, Vreede began to build up the library and archive at the Goetheanum with its own resources. In 1924 she became head of the mathematical-astronomical section of the School of Spiritual Science at the Goetheanum. Vreede had an external effect, among other things, by issuing calendars, astronomical newsletters and star maps.

After the break between the Anthroposophical Society and the United Free Anthroposophical Groups in Germany , Vreede was expelled from the Anthroposophical Society in April 1935, along with the doctor Ita Wegman and the leaders of the United Free Anthroposophical Groups . A few months after Wegman's death, she too died after a brief illness.
