State Archives in Osijek
The State Archives in Osijek is a state archive in the Croatian city of Osijek .
The tradition of keeping the document collection in the Osijek public authorities has continued uninterrupted from the end of the seventeenth century to the present day. But the processing of the archive began when the independent institute of the archive was established on November 18, 1947 in Osijek. First it worked as a branch of the Zagreb archive and from November 21, 1956 as an independent institution under the name The Archive in Osijek . The name was changed to The Historical Archive in Osijek (Historijski arhiv u Osijeku) in 1960 and was in effect until 1993. After the independent Republic of Croatia was proclaimed, it was called The Historical Archive in Osijek (Povijesni arhiv u Osijeku) and was in effect until 1997. When the new law on the organization of archives and state archives was passed ( Volksblatt No. 105/97. ) It was given the name that still applies today, The State Archives in Osijek (Drzavni arhiv u Osijeku). From its foundation until today, the archive has been active in the Drava-Danube region in eastern Croatia, in the Osijek-Baranja , Vukovarsko-srijemska and Viroviticko-podravska counties . The archive today comprises over 20,000 meters of inventory material and contains over 1,000 archive collections and funds . The oldest document kept in the archive dates from the 12th century. The oldest documents are mainly written in Latin , German and only a few in Croatian . In the second half of the 19th century the Croatian language predominated, only a few documents in German are available. The Latin script predominated, but the old documents were written in different versions of the Gothic script . At the time of its construction, only three employees worked at the archive; today there are 27 employees, twelve of whom are professionally trained supervisors of the archive.

building
Since its inception, the State Archives have been located at 27 Kuhac Street in the Osijek Fortress . This building did not offer enough space to accommodate all documents. For this reason, the Osijek municipality acquired a former barracks in Kamil Firinger Street 1 from the armed forces and handed it over to the State Archives. The building was established from 1973 to 1975, after which the State Archives moved to the converted building. At the beginning of the 18th century this building, a square, one-story house in the style of the old baroque , was built as part of the Osijek fortress and completed in 1721. It offers around 2000 square meters of usable space, of which 1500 square meters are storage space, 100 square meters for workplaces and the remaining space is used for service rooms. In 1991 the building was damaged by bombing by the Serbian military, but thanks to state aid, support from the county and the city, the building was renovated in 1996. It is a cultural monument in the Osijek Fortress, in the urban core of the old town, which is a listed building. The State Archives have a reading room with 10 seats, an auditorium with 30 seats and the storage room.
Due to a lack of space, the former municipality of Vinkovci has given the State Archives in Osijek a building in Vinkovci, where the collection center, which serves as a branch, was opened. The collection center in Vinkovci is looked after by three archivists who keep 500 meters of material from Zupanja , Vinkovci and Vukovar . The logistics and administration for Vinkovci are located in Osijek. Another collection center was opened in 2004 with two archivists in Virovitica .
