Geographical location

The city is located in eastern Croatia, which is regionally and historically called Slavonia , right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina . Županja extends over an area of almost 89 km² along the Sava River and is the center of the "županjska Posavina " microregion . The city is 80 meters above sea level. Županja is an important traffic junction in the east-west and north-south directions. The A3 motorway , which runs close to the city, connects Zagreb with Belgrade . The transport connection to neighboring Bosnia is in the form of a bridge over the Sava, which is also the border crossing point.

Županja's neighboring cities on the Croatian side are Vinkovci in the north and Slavonski Brod in the west. On the Bosnian side, Orašje is south and Brčko is south-east of the city.

history

Županja was first mentioned in 1528 under the name Zapanablatia on the Great Lazarus Map of Hungary. The village was not formed until the 15th century, when several villages were connected to the west, Župnje Blato was created, which administratively belonged to Vukovo (today's Vukovar ). After the liberation from the Turks, Županja became part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . From 1884 to 1932 there was a tannin factory in Županja, which changed its appearance and gave it an urban character. From 1962 to 1991 Županja had about 50,000 inhabitants. When the Croatian war broke out in the 1990s, the 131st Brigade was formed in Županja, which participated in the defense of Croatia. During the war more than 10,000 projectiles from Bosnia were shot down by insurgent Serbs on Županja . In 1992 Županja received the status of a town. On December 31, 1995, the 1st US Armored Division crossed the border river to be relocated to Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of the NATO Implementation Force (IFOR).
