Elisabeth of Matzingen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth von Matzingen (* before 1289; † August 10, 1340 in Zurich ) was a Swiss abbess, from 1308 to 1340 princess abbess of the Fraumünster monastery in Zurich and thus the mistress of the city.

Live and act

Elisabeth von Matzingen comes from the Thurgau barons of Matzingen, which is documented in the 13th and 14th centuries. Elisabeth joined the Fraumünster Monastery in 1289 at the latest. Her election as abbess was confirmed on March 11, 1308. Albrecht I granted her on April 24, 1308 his fief and the administration of his worldly goods and rights.

Pope John XXII. merged on July 1, 1330 the Fraumünster with the Church of St. Peter . Between 1313 and 1316 Elisabeth was represented several times and for a long time by other women from the convent. In the same year, the Bishop of Constance, Gerhard von Bevar, gave the abbey the right to use its own seal. During her reign Elisabeth repaired the fire damage that had occurred to the abbey and altars in 1298, and in 1326 confirmed the partial revision of the letter of judgment .
