Elisenhof (farm)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elisenhof is a farm on the western outskirts of Tönning , on the Eiderstedt peninsula in Schleswig-Holstein , which was the subject of extensive archaeological excavations in the 1960s . He lies on a large terp .

As the excavations by Albert Bantelmann showed, a Frisian settlement was established here in the 8th century on a bank wall up to NN +2 m high on a creek . The settlement area was intensively used from the 8th to the 11th century, only sporadically in the late Middle Ages and finally abandoned. In the course of time, the residential stalls moved down the slope of the bank wall, and the creek was filled with rubbish and manure. At the same time, the terp became continuous with the remains of demolished houses, dung and clay soilpiled up. During the four hundred year occupancy phase, the settlement area was increased by almost 4 meters in order to make the settlement safer from storm surges . During the entire settlement period, at least 68 buildings were erected and demolished on the terp. The excavations uncovered a wealth of excellently preserved archaeological finds such as wooden objects, bone and bone tools, textile and leather remains, ceramic vessels, metal weapons and tools as well as numerous animal bones and food waste. The results of several years of scientific processing of these finds have been extensively published in numerous publications and are an important source for research into the material culture of the first millennium in northern Germany and southern Scandinavia.
