Eliza Carthy (born August 23, 1975 in Scarborough , North Yorkshire , England ) is a British folk musician ( vocals , fiddle , also accordion , guitar , piano ).

Life

Eliza Carthy is the daughter of Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson , who are among the greats of English folk. Eliza Carthy appeared on stage for the first time when she was 13. Her repertoire includes both English folk songs and songs she wrote herself. She sings and accompanies herself. Her topics are also topics of current politics such as the refugee crisis or domestic violence.

Since 1993, Eliza Carthy has published solo albums as well as those in collaboration with other artists such as the Watersons or appears with her father at English folk festivals, but also tours internationally. As Eliza Carthy & the Wayward Band, she released a music video in March 2017 that also featured Teddy Thompson , son of folk musicians Richard and Linda Thompson .

In 2014 she was named a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her services to folk music.
