Hassana Alidou (born March 29, 1963 in Niamey ) is a Nigerien educator and diplomat .

Life

Hassana Alidou went to school at the École Canada of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Perpetual Help in Niamey. She studied at Niamey University , where she did a bachelor's degree in linguistics in 1987 . With a scholarship, she continued her studies at the University of Illinois , where she earned her master's degree in linguistics in 1991 and then worked as a university assistant.

Alidou returned to Niger in 1993 and worked until 1994 as a lecturer in linguistics at Niamey University. She then worked for the German Foundation for International Development , which she advised on a project for primary education in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso . From 1996 she was also a consultant for education and literacy at the Dutch development agency in Niger. Alidou received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Illinois in 1997.

She worked at Texas A&M University from 1998 to 2002 as an assistant professor of English as a second language and as a coordinator for multicultural education. At the same time, she was a lecturer in education and development at the University of Sussex from 1999 to 2000 and, as academic director, headed a project for bilingual education and literacy for the German Foundation for International Development, UNICEF and the Ministry of Education of Burkina Faso from 2000 to 2003 .

Hassana Alidou worked as a professor at Alliant International University in San Diego from 2002 . She advocated the use of indigenous languages ​​instead of English and French in the early upbringing of African schoolchildren. She advised the UNESCO Institute for Education on bilingual, multilingual and native language education in Africa. She was also the UNESCO Regional Director in Abuja .

Alidou became Niger's Ambassador to the United States in 2015 instead of Maman Sambo Sidikou . From 2016 she was also accredited as Ambassador to Canada . She was appointed special envoy in 2018 . Abdallah Wafy succeeded her as ambassador to the United States .

Hassana Alidou has three children. Her twin sister is Ousseina Alidou .
