Elizabeth Rummel

Elizabeth Rummel (called "Lizzie", born February 19, 1897 in Munich ; † 1980 ) was a German- Canadian environmentalist .

Life

She was the daughter of Baron von Rummel . In 1911, her family bought a ranch in Alberta . Elizabeth Rummel lived there when the First World War broke out. She stayed there after the war, especially since she lost her family fortune in Germany and she had established a connection to the mountains of the Rocky Mountains . She started running several lodges in the mountains and also offered the guests in-depth knowledge of the mountains. Elizabeth Rummel was a member of the Alpine Club of Canada . Her estate is in the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies .

Awards

  • In 1979 she was awarded Canada's highest award for a lifetime achievement , the Order of Canada . Her contributions to protecting the environment were recognized and honored for passing on her knowledge of the Rocky Mountains to others.
  • Rummel Lake, Rummel Creek, Rummel Pass and Elizabeth Lake are reminiscent of them, as is the Elizabeth Rummel School in Canmore (Alberta) .
