Elkanah (Bible)
Elkanah is the name of eight or nine people in the Old Testament , of which Elkanah, the father of the prophet Samuel , is the most famous.
etymology
The Hebrew personal name אֶלְקָנָה 'ælqānāh , German ' Elkana ' is a verb sentence name, consisting of subject and predicate. Subject and at the same time theophoric element is אֶל 'æl "God", the predicate is derived from the verb root קנה qnh "found / create / create". The name therefore means "God created". It is a thank you name that uses the language of creation. The name is also recorded in other Semitic languages, namely Assyrian as Ilu-qa-na-a or Qa-na-a-ilu and Samaritan as ' Ilqāni .
The Septuagint gives the name as Ελκανα Elkana again, the Vulgate as Helcana , the Samaritan Pentateuch as ' Ilqāne .
Elkanah, son of Korach
In Ex 6.24 EU Elkanah is the second eldest son of Korach , his brothers are Assir and Abiasaf.
Elkanah, father of Samuel
In 1 Sam 1,1 EU (and also in 1 Chr 6,12 EU and 19 EU ) Elkanah is the father of the prophet Samuel. He is a supplicant and comes from Ramatajim in the mountains of Ephraim . He is a son of Jeroham, the son of Elihus, the son of Tohus, the son of Zufs.
His two wives are called Hanna and Peninna , from whom Hanna cannot have children at first, but Peninna already ( 1 Sam 1,2 EU ). Every year Elkanah moves to Shiloh with his wives . There Hanna is humiliated by Peninna because of her childlessness. Finally, Hanna becomes pregnant (cf. 1 Sam 1.19 EU ) and gives birth to Samuel ( 1 Sam 1.20 EU ). When Samuel is weaned, Elkanah and Hannah take him to Shiloh, where he is serving with the priest Eli ( 1 Sam 2:11 EU ).
Elkanah, several Levites
Chapter 1 Chr 6 EU contains a genealogy of the Levi tribe . In it several Levites with the name Elkanah are mentioned, whose relationship to one another is unclear.
In 1 Chr 6,8 EU Elkanah is a son of Assir and grandson of Korach, father of Abiasaf and grandfather of Assir. In 1 Chr 6:22 EU Elkanah is not mentioned, there Assir is also the son of Abiasaf, but not the grandson of Elkanah, but Korach. Both mentions are probably based on Ex 6.24 EU , where Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaf are mentioned as the sons of Korach.
In 1 Chr 6,10 EU Elkanah is named as the father of Amasai and Ahimat, whereby this person is apparently to be identical with the one in 1 Chr 6,8 EU . In 1 Chr 6,21 EU this is shown differently. The Elkanah from v. 21 is only identical with that from v. 10, but not with that from v. 8, since this is skipped in the sequence of generations in v. 22.
In 1 Chr 6.11 EU two people with the name Elkanah are mentioned. The former is apparently said to be identical to the one in 1 Chr 6,8 EU and 10 EU , the latter is the son of the former and is also mentioned in 1 Chr 6,20 EU , although here the father is not Elkanah, but Mahat.
Elkanah, Asa's father
In 1 Chr 9,16 EU Elkanah is a Levite and father of Asa and grandfather of Bekiah.
Elkanah, follower of King David
In 1 Chr 12.7 EU Elkanah is a Benjaminite and a supporter of David in Ziklag .
Elkanah, gatekeeper
In 1 Chr 15.23 EU , Elkanah is one of the two gatekeepers for the ark next to Kalkja .
Elkanah, "second after the king"
In 2 Chr 28.7 EU Elkanah is "second after the king" under Ahaz .
