From 1966 to 1972 she studied human medicine at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In 1966 she passed the state examination and received her doctorate in 1972. med. From 1972 to 1980 she worked at the Clinic for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases of the City Hospital Berlin-Kaulsdorf. In 1977 Austenat was recognized as a specialist in internal medicine. 1979 recognition of sub-specialization in diabetes. From 1979 to 1980 she worked as a deputy chief physician at the clinic and was the medical director of the EDTA-registered peritoneal dialysis center in East Berlin.

From 1980 to 1982 Austenat was in political custody in the pre- trial detention center of the Ministry for State Security in Berlin-Pankow and in the prison in Hoheneck (Stollberg / Erzgebirge). In 1982 the ransom was bought by the Federal Republic of Germany with subsequent relocation to West Berlin. In 1982 and again after reunification in 1990, she was recognized as a victim of political persecution by the GDR regime.

From 1984 to 2007 she was a resident internist in West Berlin. In 1985 she opened and managed the first day-care hospital for diabetes patients (Diabetes Night Clinic) for Germany in West Berlin at Platz der Luftbrücke and in Marburger Strasse until 2007 . Austenat took up the vision of their diabetological teacher Volker Schliack . By restructuring the content and organization of the principle of the diabetes night clinic developed by Schliack, she achieved the inclusion of the diabetes night clinic in the hospital plan of Berlin. In 1994 the state-owned (State of Berlin) East Berlin Institute for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (formerly Central Office for Diabetes - Klosterstrasse East Berlin) was taken over by the Austenat Diabetes Institute. The relocation of East Berlin's traditional Central Office for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases from Klosterstrasse to the West Berlin location at Platz der Luftbrücke took place through Senate resolution no. 4133/93. In 2006 KV Berlin denied the legality of relocating the East Berlin outpatient diabetes dispensary central office and deprived Austenat of the economic basis of outpatient care for diabetes sufferers.
