Elke Mehnert

Elke Mehnert (born March 16, 1940 in Aue ) is a German Germanist and university professor.

Live and act

Mehnert studied chemistry, adult education, Slavic and German at the universities of Dresden and Leipzig . In 1970 she received her doctorate. In 1980 she completed her habilitation with a comparative thesis on the writer Anna Seghers . Mehnert was Rector of PH Zwickau from 1990 until the merger with the TU Chemnitz . She then taught modern German literature and comparative literature at the Technical University of Chemnitz . Since her retirement in 2005, she has been a professor at the Chair of German Language at the University of Pilsen . Since 1990 she has been leading the international research seminar "Imagology" at the TU Chemnitz. She is an honorary professor at the University of Volgograd and Dr. H. c. of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen.

Mehnert's research areas are German-language literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. Special research focuses are imagology , the German-Slavic literary relations , the German literature since 1945 as well as flight and expulsion from the historical German eastern areas.

Mehnert was a member of the board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation from 1995 to 2003 and was deputy chairwoman. From 1991 to 1995 she was a member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees and a member of the Program Committee of the Board of Trustees. In the Federal Agency for Political Education she was a member of the East-West College.
