Hermann Joseph Brünninghausen
Hermann Joseph Brünninghausen , (rarely also Hermann Josef Brünninghausen ; born April 17, 1761 in Nideggen , † February 7, 1834 in Würzburg ) was a German surgeon , obstetrician and university professor .
Life
Brünninghausen studied medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and the Georg August University of Göttingen . He was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . He then worked for seven years as an assistant at the Juliusspital in Würzburg, where he received his practical training in particular under Carl Caspar Siebold , whose cousin he was. In 1791 he was appointed professor of wound medicine at the University of Würzburg . He also became an Oberland surgeon in Würzburg. This gave him the supervision of all surgeons in Würzburg. In 1797 he was appointed general surgeon, and in 1800 by Emperor Franz II as an honorary coin with a gold chain. In 1803 he turned down a call to the University of Dorpat and in 1807 a call to the University of Tübingen . Also in 1807 he was promoted to medical advisor and medical officer, in 1814 to royal Bavarian general medical officer and in 1821 to district and government medical officer . In 1822 he suffered a stroke , as a result of which he was retired in 1824 . However, he remained scientifically active until his death. He was one of the outstanding surgeons of his time and also made progress in the field of obstetrics in which he developed the forceps with the so-called German lock. He was a member of the Imperial and Royal Medical and Surgical Joseph Academy in Vienna , the Society of Sciences and Arts in Mainz and the Physical and Medical Society in Erlangen .
