Schou was friends with the Danish writer Martin Andersen Nexø , for whom she first translated some of his stories and then later took over the control editing for the edition of his German-language edition in the GDR .

Schou spent her last years in the Niederlößnitz , in the Radebeul retirement home Altfriedstein , where the writer Jeanne Berta Semmig, who is known and admired by Schou, had previously retired .
