Elly Koch

Elly Amalie Koch (born July 24, 1916 in Chur ; † July 27, 2017 there ; entitled to live in Chur and Tamins ) was a Swiss embroiderer and author.

biography

She was considered an expert in cross-stitch embroidery in Switzerland and published numerous books on the subject. In the course of her life, for example, she collected numerous historical embroidery patterns through visits to several Graubünden valleys, which she thus saved from being forgotten.

Elly Koch was the daughter of Ulrich Benedikt Koch and Fida Koch-Brunold. The father was the owner of the Koch printing company in Chur, founded in 1796. As a toddler, Elly Koch fell ill with polio and passed the time with knitting and embroidery. At her father's request, she completed secondary school and later commercial school, after which she learned weaving and pottery in Chur . In Lugano she trained as a dressmaker. She later learned how to make small pieces of furniture from a carpenter in Chur.

In 1936 she bought a loom and opened her own handicraft shop on Kornplatz in Chur. Elly Koch also commissioned embroidery from home . As a successful entrepreneur, she had a large number of regular customers from abroad. From the 1930s onwards she exhibited her works again and again. a. in Basel , Zurich or Lucerne . At the end of 1983 she retired from her business.

Elly Koch has become known far beyond the country's borders as the “ grande dame ” of Graubünden cross stitch embroidery.

Koch died three days after her 101st birthday.
