Elmar Peter Jürgen Heizmann (born September 6, 1943 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German palaeontologist and zoologist who deals with mammals (especially cloven-hoofed animals and predators).

Life

Heizmann studied zoology, palaeontology and anatomy at the University of Basel with his doctorate in 1973. Even in his dissertation, he dealt with the discovery of Miocene mammals in Steinheim am Albuch (especially with predators). He was initially at the Natural History Museum in Basel and from 1975 at the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart , where he was senior curator and from 2001 head of paleontology. He looks after the tertiary mammals there.

He led large-scale excavations in Ulm (Westtangente) and Langenau and he did research in North and South America, East Africa, Central Asia (Aktau Mountains Kazakhstan) and China. But above all, he deals with tertiary mammals in southern Germany.

In 2001 he described a 16 to 17 million year old tooth find of a hominid in Engelswies , which is similar to Griphopithecus and Kenyapithecus . This is the oldest hominid find in Europe to date.

Through his work in Steinheim, he was also involved in founding the Meteor Crater Museum in 1974. He chairs the Advisory Board of the Swabian Alb Geopark.
