The Elo is a German dog breed not recognized by the FCI . The name "Elo" is subject to trademark protection ; the breeding of the breed is supervised by the Elo Zucht- und Forschungsgemeinschaft (EZFG) . This is not affiliated with the VDH or the FCI .

history

The Elo breeding project began in 1987 under the name "Eloschaboro", which is supposed to refer to the three most important original breeds - Eurasier , Bobtail and Chow-Chow . To broaden the breeding base and the gene pool , Samoyed and Dalmatian were later crossed. The focus of the crossing was on the Eurasier and the Bobtail, which are still crossed sporadically for the Elo. The aim of the breeding project was to breed a family and companion dog that should combine the advantages of these breeds. The selection was primarily based on nature and health; The coat type and color were secondary. The standard was also drafted with health in mind: erect ears that should not be prone to ear infections, a straight back that should prevent hip dysplasia , and a curled tail that should be less likely to hit objects and thus reduce the risk of injury.

After the dog breed was first called Eloschaboro , the short form Elo ( E urasier, Bobtai l , Ch o w), which is registered as a trademark , was chosen . The owners of the trademark rights within the EU and Switzerland are Heinz and Marita Szobries, the founders of the breed. The aim of trademark protection for the dog breed is to ensure that the trademark owner issues the license to a single breed association, whose members must meet the prescribed requirements for their breeding dogs. This is also to avoid that those interested in an Elo get to an unauthorized breeder or dog dealer who sells his puppies under the name Elo. In 2016 there were around 136 Elo kennels in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.

A sub-variant is the small Elo. Here, Kleinspitz , Mittelspitz , Pekingese and Japan-Spitz were added for breeding purposes.

The following breeds were involved in the development of today's Elo population as founder animals : Bobtail (= Old English Sheepdog ), Eurasier, Chow-Chow, German Spitz, Dalmatian, Japanese Spitz, Samoyed, Pekingese.

breed

For use in breeding, an approval is required in which the dogs are assessed in a standard and character test according to given points. Among other things, a high stimulus threshold and willingness to play are tested .

In addition, health examinations are prescribed: It is only bred with HD grade A or B, whereby grade B can only be paired with an A partner. In the Kleinelo breed, HD-B x HD-B matings are permitted as exceptions, but must be applied for as such by the breeder to the breeding management and approved by them in writing. A veterinary examination of the eyes and the kneecap (patella) is also required for breeding approval.

Essence

The breeding goal for the Elo is a rather calm and quite undemanding family dog. He usually has a very high stimulus threshold and should show little or no hunting behavior. He has a medium desire for movement and is self-confident and happy to play. The social behavior of the Elos is the focus of breeding and is influenced by special breeding programs.

According to the breeding association, around 80% of the ELOs show the desired breed-typical characteristics.

Appearance

Groß-Elos, straight hair

Elos have medium-sized, widely spaced erect ears that are easy to move and they carry the tail rolled over their backs. Elos are bred in different colors, including spotted multicolored. They have small round paws.

The Elo is bred in two sizes, each with two variants of the fur:

  • Large Elo 46 - 60 cm shoulder height with 22 - 35 kg
  • Small Elo 35 - 45 cm shoulder height with 10 - 15 kg
  • Straight hair
  • Wire hair

The appearance within these groups is very different, the straight-haired Elo looks most like a Eurasier, the rough-haired a bobtail, but with erect ears. The terms straight hair and wire hair refer exclusively to facial and leg hair of different lengths. The body fur can be haptically and visually identical in both variants. When smooth-haired elos are mated, only smooth-haired puppies appear, and when smooth / rough or rough / rough mating, puppies can have straight-hair or wire-haired. Color schemes and spotting are usually very different.

Diseases

From a breeding point of view, the Elo has the problem of the small population size with the risk of inbreeding and its sequelae of inbreeding depression , increased occurrence of hereditary diseases , including the frequent occurrence of distichiasis , which can result in corneal damage. Sebadenitis , an inherited inflammatory disease of the sebum glands, is known to affect the Elo .

In 2007, the author of a dissertation came to the conclusion that although four Bobtails were involved in the establishment of the Elo, the MDR1 defect is not to be expected in the Elo . However, she pointed out that changes in the MDR1 gene could still occur, which could affect the effectiveness of drug therapies.
