Elophila rivulalis is a butterfly from the family of Crambidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 20 to 25 millimeters. The body and wings are white and have a pattern similar to that of Elophila nymphaeata . The drawing has a more gray-brown tint and is greatly reduced compared to the similar species. A relatively reliable distinguishing feature is the comparatively small discocellular spot on the hind wing. This is usually filled with white on the inside and clearly separated from the distal line. The submarginal area of both pairs of wings is very pale, tinted pale gray and bordered on the inside by gray spots. The fringed scales are lightly speckled. The R 2 vein arises separately from the discoidal cell of the forewing. Distally, it fuses over a short section with the R 3 + 4 vein and then separates from it again towards the edge of the wing.

The genital fittings of the males are similar to that of Elophila nymphaeata and Elophila feili , but like Elophila bourgognei there is only a heavily sclerotized bristle at the costal edge of the valves . The uncus is blunt, the gnathos is slightly shorter than that of the two similar species. The phallus is provided with two long cornuti and a terminal, sclerotized plate with three teeth. In Elophila bourgognei , however, only a long cornutus is formed.

In females, which is ovipositor relatively short and powerful and has basal slightly dilated apophyses. The bursal duct is extremely short and heavily sclerotized. It widens towards the ostium . The seminal duct arises in the upper part of the corpus bursae . A signum is not formed.

Similar species

The similar species, Elophila nymphaea, is on average slightly larger than E. rivulalis .

distribution

Elophila rivulalis is distributed in Europe from the Netherlands to Sicily and from France to Poland . In addition, the species occurs in Croatia , Greece and Corsica and Sardinia .

biology

The moths fly on the banks of streams in the late afternoon, the copulation was observed by Klimesch around 6:00 p.m. In Italy the flight time ranged from June to September. In older literature, butterfly finds are documented as early as April, which could be an indication that the species forms two generations per year. More than two generations can presumably arise in suitable locations. The species is very rare. This must have been the case before, as only individual specimens were ever caught. The pre-imaginal stages are unknown. It is believed that the caterpillars live aquatic.
