Elsa Cavelti

Elsa Cavelti (born May 4, 1907 in Rorschach ; † August 10, 2001 in Basel ) was a Swiss singer ( alto , mezzo-soprano ) and vocal teacher .

Life

Elsa Cavelti received her vocal training first in Zurich, then in Germany and Austria. In 1936 she made her debut at the Stadttheater Kattowitz and moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1938. Engagements at the Oberschlesisches Landestheater Beuthen (1939–1942) and Opernhaus Düsseldorf (1942–1944) as well as the Semperoper (1944) followed until she returned to Switzerland in 1944.

In her home country she worked at the Basel Theater in 1944 and then at the Zurich Opera House . In addition to her engagements at opera houses, she appeared in guest performances a. a. in Belgium, France, Italy, Great Britain, Argentina and the USA.

In 1959 she took up a second singing course in Basel and switched to the highly dramatic soprano subject . In 1966 she also sang at the Bayreuth Festival . She was successful as an oratorio singer, recorded records and worked as a singing teacher. From 1970 she taught at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt am Main and later in Basel. Claudia Eder , Gabriele Schnaut and Ortrun Wenkel are among her students .

Elsa Cavelti died in Basel in 2001.
