Gabriele Schnaut

Gabriele Schnaut (born February 24, 1951 in Mannheim ) is a German opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Schnaut grew up in Mainz and received violin and singing lessons as a child. She first studied violin at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz and at the same time studied musicology at the University. From 1971 she studied singing at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt am Main with Elsa Cavelti , followed by private studies in East Berlin . She received her first permanent engagement as a mezzo-soprano in 1976 at the Stuttgart State Opera . A year later she made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival . This was followed by further engagements at the Darmstadt State Theater (1978–1980), the Nationaltheater Mannheim (1980–1986) and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf (1986–1990).

From 1985 she switched from the mezzo to the highly dramatic soprano and worked on roles such as Brünnhilde in Der Ring des Nibelungen , Ortrud in Lohengrin , Kundry in Parsifal , Sieglinde in Die Walküre , Isolde in Tristan and Isolde , Elektra , Färberin and Amme in Die Frau ohne Schatten , Tosca , Turandot and sexton in Jenufa .

In 1995 Schnaut was appointed Hamburg Chamber Singer . In 2003, she was the Bavarian Minister of Culture Hans Zehetmair to the Bavarian chamber singer named. In 2006 she received the Bavarian Order of Merit for her services .
