Elsa Stansfield ( March 12, 1945 in Glasgow - November 30, 2004 in Amsterdam ) was a Scottish - Dutch installation artist and pioneer of video art .

life and work

Elsa Stansfield was born and raised in Glasgow in 1945. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1962 to 1965 , then for two years at Ealing Art College in London and until 1969 film at the Slade School of Fine Art in London . She then made an extensive trip through India , from which she returned in 1970 and founded her own film and sound studio, where she produced her own films until 1975. Since 1972 she worked with Madelon Hooykaas in London and Amsterdam . In 1980 she was appointed head of the time-based media department at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht . She worked there until 1991. Stansfield traveled to Mexico several times and lived and worked in the Netherlands since 1980. In 2004 she died unexpectedly of leukemia .

The collaboration between Elsa Stansfield and Madelon Hooykaas resulted in videos, video installations, sound sculptures and later interactive installations and art in public spaces .

The duo's works are exhibited internationally, for example at the Biennale of Sydney , 1987 at documenta 8 in Kassel or at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and many other museums have works by Stansfield and Hooykaas in their collections.
