history

In 1870, then 20-year-old Dominik Elsen founded the Elsen haulage company. The main field of activity was wood and furniture transport as well as the transport of coal and components for horse-drawn carriages . His son, Hubert Elsen, continued the company from 1920 and bought the first truck a year later. By selling all horses, the company only had trucks in the mid-1920s. During the Second World War, the business building and the entire fleet of trucks were destroyed in a bombing of Wittlich. Hubert Elsen was killed in this attack.

In 1946 Karl Elsen, Hubert Elsen's son, returned from captivity and began to rebuild the company. By 1955, with the support of his wife, brother and brother-in-law, he established an international freight forwarding and logistics company . By 1973 the company moved into new facilities in Trier , Cologne , Berlin , Koblenz and Grevenmacher . In addition, the subsidiary Elsen Transports S.á.rl was founded, which was sold at the end of 2011. 26 years after the reconstruction, Gerhard Groß, Karl Elsen's brother-in-law, became another partner. When Josef Elsen left in 1988, Wolfgang Groß, son of Gerhard Groß, became the company's new partner and managing director. In 1990 Elsen co-founded the research and development company for transport Fortras and started business activities for the associated company R&F Spedition in Berlin. Four years later, Karl Elsen adopted Wolfgang Groß, who has been called Wolfgang Groß-Elsen ever since. In addition to his brother, Volker Groß has been a partner since 1997 and a managing director in Germany and Poland since 2002 .

In the first four years of the 21st century, the Fortras and Ssystem-Plus activities were merged to form the System Alliance. In addition, the subsidiaries were Elsen Logistics GmbH and Con-Log logistics and Consulting GmbH in Germany and the Elsen Logistyka Sp. Sp.k . newly founded in Poland. In 2004 the company introduced a standardized quality management system and is now certified with all subsidiaries according to ISO 9001 . Karl Elsen died in early 2005 at the age of 85. One year later, Elsen announced the sale of the system transport division to Hellmann Worldwide Logistics . This was followed by joining the ELVIS AG cooperation (European cargo association for international forwarders). In 2007, Thomas Klein, another managing director and silent partner, joined the company.
