action

The anesthetist Christine and the theater director Konrad live with their two daughters Käthe and Emma in an old apartment in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In recent years Konrad has looked after the children and took a break from his job in favor of his wife's career, who is about to be promoted to senior physician. But when he receives a good offer to stage a play, he wants to go back to work.

An Argentinian au pair is hired, but she is not up to the requirements. Isabel hardly speaks any German, actually only came to Germany to study and is also pregnant. Konrad is not ready to step back again and insists that Christine now take care of the family, which they promise. But on the first day she was held up in the clinic and the children were left on their own in the apartment.

Konrad confronts Christine and leaves their apartment. He moves to the theater in order to be able to concentrate better on his work and to be able to face difficulties in being able to assert his ideas against the cast.

Christine is meanwhile overwhelmed with the care of the children, whom she does not perceive as a person of respect. Especially from Käthe, the ten-year-old firstborn, she gets a lot of headwind. She also has to take care of Isabel, who is unsure whether she wants to have her child or not. She looks for Konrad in the theater, but he reacts negatively to her visit. When she found him on the street the next day, accompanied by his outfitter Julie, she assumed he was having an affair, as she herself had one with a colleague from the clinic. Konrad seeks clarification, but is turned away by his own daughter at the front door.

It is only when Isabel disappears with her two daughters and does not appear again at first that Christine and Konrad grapple. However, it remains to be seen how the family will continue.

Reviews

The film received mostly positive reviews. Martin Schwickert describes him at Zeit Online as “completely authentic in every scene” and considers it “excellently successful” to show “the big issues in very personal stories” . Anke Dürr attests to Robert Thalheim at Spiegel Online that she “told the story precisely” and that “with an accuracy that hurts” . But it's also fun to watch the actors. Anke Westphal, on the other hand, says in the Berliner Zeitung that the children played best. Watching them is "simply breathtaking." Otherwise, one watches these "not so very significant middle class problems (...) quite unmoved" .

Awards

The film was nominated for the Jupiter 2014 election in the categories of Best German Film (Robert Thalheim), Best German Actor (Charly Hübner) and Best German Actress (Christiane Paul).
