Elzear (ius) Horn (* around 1690 near Hammelburg ; † November 28, 1744 in Ptolemais , Syria) was a Franciscan missionary and explorer of Palestine . He belonged to the Thuringian province of his order.

Life

Elzearius Horn made his profession at the age of 18 and was ordained priest at the age of 22 . Horn first visited the Holy Land around 1720. From 1725 to 1726 he was in charge of the custody of the Holy Sepulcher . From 1737 to 1738 he was choirmaster and secretary of the Jerusalem convent of S. Salvatoris . Under the title Ichnographiae locorum et monumentorum veterum terrae Sanctae ("Outlines of old places and monuments of the Holy Land") he wrote a description of locations and buildings, which he provided with detailed architectural drawings from his own perspective and revised throughout his life. After his return to the Thuringian province in 1739, he soon traveled back to the Holy Land, where he spent the rest of his life.

According to the necrology, Elzearius Horn died at the age of 52.

Horn's three-volume manuscript ended up in the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana (signature Vat. Lat. 9233 I – III), where it was forgotten until it was discovered there in 1902 by Girolamo Golubovich, OFM , and a selection was published. The second edition by Bagatti and Hoarde (1962) is only a selection from Horn's estate. All three volumes are digitized (see web links).

The Ichnographiae are the source for the appearance of the burial place of the Crusader Kings , which was destroyed during the renovation in 1808, as well as the also lost pavement in the style of the Cosmats . Horn's amateur pen drawings are considered important evidence of the actual appearance of the buildings.
