location

The municipality of Embonas extends over 77.666 km² from the west coast of the Dodecanese island of Rhodes to the summit region of Attavyros , the highest mountain on the island. It completely encloses the area of the community of Kritinia to the west . In a clockwise direction, Salakos , Apollona , Laerma , Agios Isidoros and Siana border from north to south .

The place Embonas is located on the northwestern foothills of the Attavyros at 430 m above sea level and is one of the highest places on the island. Extensive vineyards stretch south of the village, after which the terrain rises steeply to the summit of Attavyros . The settlement of Mandriko is located north of Kritinia directly on the coastal road.

Administrative structure and population development

Under the name Èmbona , the statistical data recorded during the Italian period for the place 867 inhabitants in 1921, 1086 inhabitants in 1931 and 1082 inhabitants in 1936.

After the annexation of the Dodecanese to Greece in 1947, Embonas formed together with Mandriko and the hamlet of Nani from 1948 to the rural community of Embonas ( Κοινότητα Έμπωνα Kinótita Émbona ). Between 1952 and 1966, Mandriko was initially added to the rural community of Kritinia and briefly formed an independent rural community in 1967. The hamlet of Nani was dissolved in 1991. With the territorial reform in 1997 , the merger with four other rural communities took place to form what was then Atavyros, with Embonas as the administrative seat. With the implementation of the administrative reform in 2010, this in turn became a municipality in the municipality of Rhodes , where Embonas has been a municipality since then.
