The IPD 6505 Urupema was a development by the Brazilian Instituto de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento (IPD) .

history

A group of engineers led by Guido Fontegalante Pessotti began work on a high-performance glider , the IPD 6505 Urupema , in 1964 . The machine was supposed to offer the Brazilian pilots the best conditions for global gliding championships. The prototype was started in 1965, but did not fly until 1968. In the same year the prototype took part in the World Championships in Poland and in 1970 in Texas, where it was awarded. Due to the excellent performance, the Ministry of Aviation, which wanted to equip the most important domestic aero clubs with new high-performance gliders, commissioned the newly founded Embraer aviation company in 1970 with the construction of 10 slightly modified copies, which should bear the designation EMB-400 Urupema .

construction

The Urupema was designed as a shoulder-wing aircraft with a conventional tail unit. The single-seat cockpit with a one-piece canopy is located in the fuselage in front of the wings. There is a single wheel under the fuselage. The aircraft was a construction made of wood, sandwich panels, foam plastics, and plywood planking.

Versions

  • Super Urupema - Four copies were subsequently modified by IPE in such a way that a higher cockpit hood and other seats were installed that allowed the pilots to sit lying down instead of almost lying down as before.
