Emil Cathrein

Emil Cathrein (born January 13, 1847 in Brig ; † November 14, 1916 there ) was a Swiss hotel director and politician.

His parents were the hardware dealer and government governor of the Brig district, Andreas Cathrein, and Katharina, nee. Venetz, von Stalden, his siblings Viktor and Catharina. He initially worked in his father's business. Since his sister had been married to the Zermatt " hotel king " Alexander Seiler I since 1857 , he also turned to the hotel industry and became a pioneer of tourism in the Aletsch region . From 1872 he managed the Hotel Jungfrau-Eggishorn ob Fiesch , which he expanded into a mountain hotel. In 1887/1888 he acquired the Riederalp and Riederfurka hotels above Mörel . Donald Currie hired him in 1895 and 1897 as director of his hotels in Cape Town and Johannesburg .

From 1880 to 1896 he was Mayor of Brig and 1889-1913 Valais cantonal parliament .
