Emil Alfred Fellmann (born September 17, 1927 in Basel ; † May 18, 2012 ibid) was a Swiss historian of science who was particularly known for his collaboration in the publication of Leonhard Euler's works .

Live and act

Emil Fellmann studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and Latin philology at the University of Basel . His publication activities with a focus on the history of natural sciences in the 17th to 19th centuries began in 1957. From 1953 to 1978 he headed the Platonaeum evening high school in Basel, which he founded . Fellmann has worked on the Euler Edition since 1967, was appointed to the Euler Commission in 1972 and was its secretary from 1976 to 1996. From 1979 he was editor-in-chief of the 4th series (correspondence) of the Opera omnia Eulers and from 1980 president of the international editorial committee. In 1989 Fellmann was a visiting professor at the University of Bonn on the subject of "Basel's Mathematical Century".

Fellman is the author of a biography of Euler which has been translated into several languages. In addition to his activities in connection with Euler's works, Fellmann wrote about 75 articles on the history of science, e. B. About Honoré Fabri (Honoratus Fabry), Johann Heinrich Lambert , Isaac Newton , Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , Christiaan Huygens , Johann I Bernoulli , Charles Hermite , Heinrich Weber , Rudolf Brefin .

The Académie internationale d'Histoire des Sciences in Paris Fellmann belonged since 1971 as a corresponding member in 1973, he was elected a full member. In 2001 the Faculty of Science at the University of Basel awarded him an honorary doctorate .
