Emil Julius Uhlfelder

Emil Julius Uhlfelder (born February 9, 1871 in Munich ; † August 11, 1935 there ) was a German chemist.

Life

Born the son of the Jewish banker and commercial judge at the regional court, Hermann Uhlfelder (1836–1902), and his wife Jenny, née May (1843–1915), Emil Uhlfelder grew up with his siblings Joseph (1867–1906) and Franziska (1868–1890) ) in Munich. From 1880 to 1890 he attended the humanistic Maximiliansgymnasium . After graduating from high school with, among others, Ernst von Bibra , Otto Dimroth , Sigmund Hellmann and August Möslinger , he studied chemistry at the University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1896 as an assistant at the chemical laboratory of the Royal Conservatory. phil. with the dissertation “About some derivatives of nitrobiuret and nitrodicyandiamidine”.

Uhlfelder has researched and published in the field of organic chemistry. Together with Alfred Einhorn , he synthesized the local anesthetic novocaine in the Hoechst paint factory in 1904 , which was patented. It was mainly used in dentistry as a substitute for cocaine.

In 1905 Uhlfelder acquired citizenship in Munich. He remained unmarried and died at the age of 64; his urn was buried in the grave of his daughter Franziska in the old Israelite cemetery in Munich .
