Emil Pirchan the Elder (born May 21, 1844 in St. Kathrein (Svatá Kateřina) near Wranau in the Brno district , Austrian Empire ; † June 22, 1928 in Vienna ) was an Austrian academic painter .

Life

Emil Pirchan was the son of a forester couple from St. Katharein near Wranau in the Moravian Karst region north of Brno . Emil Pirchan was with Karoline, geb. Edle von Sternischtie (* May 21, 1864 in Priesenitz near Brno, † April 19, 1945 in Vienna) married and had two children, Emil Pirchan (* May 27, 1884 in Brno; † December 20, 1957 in Vienna) and Elsa Pirchan (born April 14, 1885 in Brno, † April 12, 1970 in Vienna)

Act

He worked from 1874 to 1892 as a drawing professor at the Brno municipal secondary school. He portrayed numerous important contemporaries in Brno and designed several designs for the pageant on the occasion of the imperial visit to Brno in 1892. He was the last pupil of Carl Rahl , who called him his best pupil. Due to his extraordinary talent, he was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna at the age of 16 , where he studied from 1860 to 1865.

In 1878, in recognition of his artistic achievements, he was given a one-year vacation for a study trip to Italy, more precisely to Florence, Rome and Venice. From there he brought home numerous works and designs. In Florence he made friends with the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin .

Among other things, he created the large painting “The girl from abroad”, which was exhibited in the Vienna Art Association in 1881 and was awarded the Kaiser Prize. The historical picture “Emperor Joseph II plows near Slawikowitz” was widely used as it was reproduced in school books and his painting “Dying Savior” was shown in over 30 special exhibitions in Germany. The poet Ferdinand von Saar , with whom he was friends, dedicated a distich to him : "The paths of beauty of painters and poets also walk separately: they always find one another at their destination". He was represented at the exhibitions of the Austrian Art Association, the Künstlerhaus in Vienna, the Munich anniversary exhibition (1888) and the Dresden Academic Exhibition (1889). Emil Pirchan the Elder Ä. was a member of the Austrian Association of Artists, Vienna.

A large collective exhibition of his works in the Brno Künstlerhaus in 1906 provided a good overview of his work. In his life, Pirchan created more than 400 easel paintings, portraits, ceiling paintings and a vast number of hand drawings, watercolors, pastel studies and three-dimensional designs. In the Albertina in Vienna there is a watercolor Praying Peasant Woman and a drawing The Mother of Emil Pirchan the Elder. Ä.

From March 21 to June 23, 2019, the exhibition Emil Pirchan (the Elder) - Prince Painter of the Brno Ring Road took place in the Brno City Museum in the Spielberg Fortress .
