Emil Rohde (born January 18, 1839 in Düsseldorf , † December 18, 1913 in Munich ) was a German theater actor .

Life

Emil Rohde was born as the son of the actors and actresses August and Magdalena Rohde. His grandfather Matthias Rohde (1782–1838) was a famous comedian at the Stuttgart court theater and was friends with Carl Maria von Weber .

Rohde also came to the Hoftheater Stuttgart as a volunteer in 1856 , where his family was known. Then he went to Poznan , from 1859–1864 he played at the Urania Theater in Breslau . Here he made a lifelong friendship with his fellow actor Ernst von Possart (1841–1921). From 1864 to 1913 Emil Rohde was engaged at the Royal Court Theater in Munich . He carried the title of Bavarian court actor . Here, too, he worked again with Ernst von Possart and played hero roles. He was particularly known as Tellheim in Minna von Barnhelm , as Romeo , Don Carlos and Torquato Tasso .

King Ludwig II of Bavaria was very enthusiastic about his portrayal of Don Carlos and accepted Rohde among his favorite artists. He was one of the actors who often had to play in separate performances for the ruler. Emil Rohde, Josef Kainz (1858–1910) and Franz Innozenz Nachbaur (1830–1903) were the three Munich stage artists who had close personal relationships with King Ludwig II.

Rohde was married, lived in the Munich district of Lehel (Herzog-Rudolf-Straße 39) and had a daughter named Anna Rohde (1870–1953), who worked as a Bavarian state actress in Munich. The artist died in 1913 and was buried in the Old Northern Cemetery; the grave is preserved (2013). In Munich- Pasing , “Rohde-Strasse” is named after him.
