Georg Emil Carl Christoph Schüz (born August 12, 1828 in Calw ; † April 6, 1877 there ) was a German practicing doctor and botanist .

Life

Emil Schüz first attended elementary school and later the Latin school in his hometown, before moving to high school in Stuttgart in May 1842 . In October 1846 he moved to the University of Tübingen to study medicine , where he stayed until autumn 1851 , except for one semester at the University of Heidelberg . When he returned to Calw, he started a traineeship at the local physics department in the same year. After his father died on December 23, 1852, Schüz took over his practice, passed the state examination in July 1853 and from then on worked as a country and town doctor in and around Calw. Due to a knee joint and liver disease, against which he repeatedly sought help in Wildbad and Karlsbad , he gave up his practice in the winter of 1870/71. Emil Schüz, who had also suffered from fatty heart disease for years, died of a heart attack on the morning of April 6, 1877 while getting dressed .

Through his family he came into contact with the natural sciences at an early age. As early as his high school days, he began a collection of natural materials and also continued his education in zoology and botany at the university, the latter in particular being his favorite. Since he took over his father's practice at a very early age, he could hardly go on scientific trips at a young age, which he only made up for in later years. After his retirement he concentrated on his collections and associations and continued his literary work.

Schüz was a member of numerous associations, including since 1853 in the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg , since 1859 in the Upper Hessian Society for Natural Science and Medicine, since 1868 in the Württemberg Antiquities Association , since 1872 in the Anthropological Society and since 1873 in the Zoological Society Botanical Society . On April 10, 1876 , he was accepted into the Leopoldina (botany section). He also tried to visit the meetings of German naturalists and doctors regularly (1853, 1857, 1865, 1868, 1869, 1872, 1873, 1875 and 1876).

In the house Marktplatz 30 ("Haus Schüz") built in 1813 for the doctor Johann Georg Zahn, his maternal grandfather, Schüz's birthplace and later home, the Hermann Hesse Museum has been located in Calw since 1990 . There is a memorial stone in the Calw city garden, in which Schüz had rare trees planted.
