Emil Schmid (botanist)

Emil Schmid (born February 18, 1891 in Cannstatt , † June 11, 1982 in Marin-Epagnier , reformed , resident in St. Gallen ) was a Swiss botanist . His botanical author's abbreviation is " Em.Schmid ".

Life

Emil Schmid, son of the merchant and Swiss consul Wilhelm Schmid and Maria, née Koch, graduated from high school in Nuremberg , studied zoology and botany at the University of Zurich between 1911 and 1919 . In 1922 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD .

After a long stay in Italy , Emil Schmid took up the position of curator at the Institute for Systematic Botany at the University of Zurich in 1931 , which he held until 1956. To this end , Schmid completed his habilitation in botany in Zurich in 1935, where he initially worked as a private lecturer , and from 1944 to 1961 as adjunct professor with teaching activities. In addition, he held a botany professorship at Istanbul University in 1958 and 1959 .

Emil Schmid - he undertook research trips to the Mediterranean region , Turkey and Mexico - made valuable contributions to the characterization and mapping of large-scale vegetation. Among other things, Schmid created the vegetation map of Switzerland published in 1949 .

Emil Schmid - he married Margareta in 1921, the daughter of the engineer Edmund Gams - died in 1982 at the age of 92.
