Emilio Serrano

Emilio Serrano (born March 13, 1850 in Vitoria , Basque Country , † April 8, 1939 in Madrid ) was a Spanish pianist and composer .

Life

Emilio Serrano lived in Madrid since his early youth and received his musical training at the local conservatory. He studied piano with Dámaso Zabalza , harmony with José Aranguren and composition with Emilio Arrieta . Serrano soon began teaching himself and was accepted into the faculty after completing his training. In 1894 he succeeded the late Arrieta in his chair for composition, which he held until 1920. In addition to his teaching activities, he was a productive composer and was also active in many other functions in the musical life of the Spanish metropolis. He was an excellent pianist at the Spanish royal family as a chamber musician, for some time headed the Royal Theater and was a leading and recognized figure in the musical life in Madrid at that time.

He was a versatile composer who, in addition to operas, also created zarzuelas , symphonic , chamber music and piano works. He was very much in the tradition of Spanish music of his time and was a staunch representative of the Spanish National Opera.
