Le Roy Ladurie is the son of Jacques Le Roy Ladurie , a former Minister of Agriculture in the collaborative government of Henri Philippe Pétain . From 1955 to 1957 he taught as a teacher at the lycée de garçons de Montpellier . During this time he began to do research, which had a decisive influence on his career. From 1958 to 1960 he was employed as a research assistant at the Center national de la recherche scientifique and from 1960 to 1963 he was an assistant at the art faculty in Montpellier. He then switched to teaching at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). In 1966 he received his doctorate in literature with Les Paysans de Languedoc . The work, Montaillou, village occitan de 1294 à 1324 , had worldwide success. The work is about an Occitan village in Languedoc and is based on the notes of the Inquisitor Jacques Fournier, the bishop of Pamiers in the 14th century. Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie was, among other things, a professor at the Collège de France , where he held the chair for the history of modern civilization between 1973 and 1999. In 1974 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and 1979 to the American Philosophical Society . Since 1989 he has been a member of the Academia Europaea . He headed the Bibliothèque nationale de France from 1987 to 1994 and is the author of historical bestsellers . His monograph Montaillou on the life and mentality of shepherds and farmers in the village of Montaillou during the Cathar persecution was a great success.

His main field is the research and description of the life of the common people in the Middle Ages and the early modern period , especially in the Languedoc-Roussillon region . He reconstructs the everyday history and structures behind the events, for example from minutes of the Inquisition or tax lists and lawyers' pamphlets from the small town of Romans . The direction of his scientific work was determined by his affiliation with the Annales School.

Le Roy Ladurie is considered one of the pioneers of historical climatology . He was a pioneer in the reconstruction of climate history from written documents, the climate archives of society. In his book on climate history, he initially concentrated on the reconstruction of the climate of the past from historical sources, also as a response to the attempts of older historians to create climatic determinism in historiography.

Le Roy Ladurie is considered one of the most influential contemporary historians, as he is considered a pioneer of micro-historical analysis. He was strongly influenced by his mentor Fernand Braudel of the Annales School .

He also wrote about the rise of Thomas Platter the Elder , a Swiss who made it from shepherd to humanist and rector in Basel , and edited documents, autobiographies and travelogues about him and his family, especially Thomas Platter the younger , who in Montpellier studied.

Le Roy Ladurie is a member of the "Association d'études et de recherches en sciences sociales Annie Kriegel ", an anti-totalitarian scientific association.

Despite his retirement, he is still very active and attends conferences and also publishes articles. Especially in the area of climate history.
