Emmanuel Riggins

Emmanuel Riggins (born September 17, 1942 in Yazoo City , Missouri, † May 28, 2015 in Cleveland ) was an American keyboardist , music producer and arranger .

Life

Riggins attended Warren G. Harding High School (graduated in 1961) and studied music at Youngstown State University , Wayne State University, and computer technology at the Control Data Institute. He played in an army band while doing his military service in the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge from the army , he received the National Defense Service Medal . Around 1970 he played with Grant Green , heard on the Blue Note albums Green Is Beautiful, Visions and Shades of Green Riggins was able to persuade Green to move from New York to Detroit. In the 1970s he worked with Billy Wooten (for whom he also arranged) and the singer Betty Lou Landreth . In the field of jazz he was involved in six recording sessions between 1970 and 1996, most recently with Calvin Brooks . He produced the smooth jazz single Maria / Two Ships Passing in the Night for Marcus Belgrave . In his main job he worked for many years in Ohio as a welder at Levi Steel and as a nursing service driver. Riggins was later a church organist for the New Freedom Missionary Baptist Church in Youngstown , Ohio, before retiring in 2012.

He is the father of jazz drummer and hip-hop producer Karriem Riggins (* 1975).
