Emmanuel Roblès (born May 4, 1914 in Oran , Algeria , † February 22, 1995 in Boulogne-Billancourt , France ) was a French writer of Spanish origin who lived in Algeria for a long time as a so-called pied noir . His forty or so novels and dramas “draw on the existentialist philosophy that confronts people with a hopeless choice”.

Life

Roblès father, whose family comes from Spain, was a simple bricklayer. He died shortly before Roblès was born. This fatherlessness shaped the son's path in life. Thanks to a scholarship, Emmanuel was able to attend high school. He became a teacher and later a school director. In the 1930s he toured the Soviet Union and Asia. From 1937 he maintained a friendship with Camus . In the same year he began his military service. He was assigned to the Air Force, where he stayed for six years because the war broke out.

From 1943 Roblès worked as a war correspondent and journalist. Returned to Algiers in 1947, he founded the literary magazine Forge . He edited the Méditerranée series for the Éditions du Seuil . He also worked for Radio Algiers . 1955 filmed Luis Buñuel Roblès' novel Cela s'appelle l'aurore (1952). From 1956 the writer was a member of a committee that advocated the armistice in the Algerian war .

reception

Roblès made his debut in 1938 with the novel L'Action . In 1948 he received the Prix Femina for his novel Les Hauteurs de la ville (On the heights of the city) . In 1950 he published a treatise on the Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca , which he also translated. In 1973 he was appointed to the renowned Académie Goncourt .

Roblès died in 1995 at the age of 80 where he lived near Paris. When you are dead, you are dead. You have to hurry to live , he had already stated decades ago as a reason for why he always preferred "strictly the earthly" to all metaphysics .

  2. Kindlers Literaturlexikon , Munich 1988 edition, cites Roblès' best-known drama Montserrat from 1948 as an example . The hero of the title captured by the Spanish occupiers of Venezuela has to choose between rescuing innocent people and loyalty to freedom fighter Simón Bolívar . He chooses fidelity. “Drastic depictions of sadistic atrocities, black and white painting, overdrawing of the characters and declamatory pathos, especially of the title character, impair the ethical mission of the play.” In artistic terms, Roblès could not hold a candle to his friend and role model Camus.
