The Emmerich-Josef-Straße is a residential, commercial and thoroughfare in Frankfurt-Hoechst . Together with Hostatostraße in the north and Bolongarostraße in the south, Emmerich-Josef-Straße is one of the three main east-west axes of the district. It runs between Leunastrasse in the west and Ludwig-Scriba-Strasse in the east.

The Emmerich-Josef-Straße is named after Emmerich Joseph von Breidbach zu Bürresheim (1707–1774), who as elector and archbishop of Mainz made an important contribution to the urban development of Höchst by founding the Höchst Neustadt .

history

In the course of industrialization and the associated city expansion in Höchst in the second half of the 19th century, Emmerich-Josef-Strasse was also built. The street is not yet included on the city map from 1864 , only the section east and west of today's Königsteiner Straße, at that time the Große Taunusstraße , is shown as Kleine Taunusstraße .

Forty-three years later, Emmerich-Josef-Strasse is drawn in its current course up to Königsteiner Strasse in the city map from 1898 . The area east of Königsteiner Strasse around Andreasplatz is still known as Kleine Taunus-Strasse ; it was added to Emmerich-Josef-Straße in 1928 as part of the incorporation of Höchsts into Frankfurt.

With the construction of the Uferstraße between Höchst and Nied in 1951 and the connection of Höchst to the Frankfurt tram network in 1952, Emmerich-Josef-Straße in the area of Zuckschwerdtstraße was connected to the new Ludwig-Scriba-Straße. The previous traffic route from Nied to Höchst via Bolongarostraße was abandoned and Bolongarostraße was converted into a two-lane one-way street towards Nied. The traffic from Nied to Höchst now flowed exclusively via Ludwig-Scriba-Straße and the section of Emmerich-Josef-Straße to Andreasplatz.

traffic

Emmerich-Josef-Straße:
Course in Höchst

Emmerich-Josef-Straße is designated as a Grundnetzstraße; it is a single-lane one-way street in a west-east direction to Andreasplatz. The main traffic load is generated by individual traffic, delivery traffic and public transport . In the direction of Nied , the traffiQ bus routes 51, 53, 58 (to Justinuskirchstraße) and 59 turn off at Andreasplatz in the direction of Bolongaropalast .

The 110 meter long section between Ludwig-Scriba-Straße and Andreasplatz is a two-lane one-way street in an east-west direction. In this section in particular, the volume of vehicles is very high, as almost all of the traffic from Nied to Höchst and Unterliederbach is routed through the road. The traffiQ bus routes 51, 53, 54, 55, 57 and 59 also run here from the Zuckschwerdtstraße stops in the direction of Höchst train station and Unterliederbach.

Current plans by the city of Frankfurt envisage abandoning the current traffic management, relieving Emmerich-Josef-Straße and especially Andreasplatz and upgrading it as an urban residential area. To this end, Ludwig-Scriba-Straße is to be extended along the Taunusbahn route to Kasinostraße and Emmerich-Josef-Straße is to be closed to through traffic. This would restore the traffic situation to before 1951.

Development

Evangelical town church

Most of the buildings in Emmerich-Josef-Straße date from the period between 1870 and 1900. Only a few old buildings were replaced by buildings from the period after 1960, this applies above all to the area between Albanusstraße and Königsteiner Straße.

In the Höchst Westend between Antoniterstrasse and Leunastrasse, these are predominantly residential buildings from the Wilhelminian era . There are no businesses in this section of Emmerich-Josef-Straße. The state of preservation of the houses varies between “in need of renovation” and “well preserved”. At the intersection with Leverkuser Straße, the red brick building of the Evangelical City Church, built in the neo-renaissance style, is striking. It was built between 1877 and 1882 with financial support from the industrialist Adolf von Brüning .

The buildings of the former Hertie department store , formerly the Schiff department store , on the corner of Königsteiner Straße and the Hertie multi-storey car park on the other side of the street dominated Emmerich-Josef-Straße in its middle section. In 1929, the Höchst family opened the department store built in the early modern style instead of a previous building. The Jewish family emigrated to the USA after 1933, and in the course of " Aryanization " the department store was transferred to the Hertie Group, which operated it until 2001. The house was completely demolished by the end of 2008 and a new, small shopping center was opened there in summer 2010.

Between Königsteiner Strasse and Ludwig-Scriba-Strasse, the development is again determined by Wilhelminian-style buildings, mostly in poor condition.

economy

The western half of Emmerich-Josef-Straße from Antoniterstraße is almost exclusively a residential street with only a few practices, a craft business and no retail stores.

In the eastern area between Antoniterstraße and Ludwig-Scriba-Straße, on the other hand, the structure of the street is characterized by retail shops, craft businesses, service providers and a number of practices.

Culture

New Theater Höchst

The cabaret Neues Theater Höchst , founded in 1987, and the attached arthouse cinema, Filmforum Höchst, have their domicile in a former cinema hall at the intersection with Antoniterstraße . In the theater's program, artists and groups, primarily from the fields of cabaret , comedy and musical , appear for one to several days each.
