Emotionen is the debut album by German pop singer Joel Brandenstein . It was released on March 31, 2017 via the Starwatch Entertainment label and in collaboration with Takeover MGMT .

background

After Joel Brandenstein had published his own songs for several years, the Mettmann company Takeover MGMT took over the management of the artist in July 2016. On November 25th it was announced that Brandenstein had signed an artist contract with Starwatch Entertainment . The release of the album was announced just one day later. Emotions is the first product of the cooperation between Takeover MGMT and Starwatch Entertainment .

The lyrics and the music of the album were written by Joel Brandenstein in collaboration with Taka Chanaiwa. Furthermore, Yuha Otshatshy was involved in the lyrics. Brandenstein made it a point to write the lyrics himself, as it is a " very personal album " that tells stories from his life. The voice recordings were made at Freiemusik in Ratingen . Thies Neu from Tonbrauerei Berlin and Kai Oliver Krug from Nautilus Music were responsible for recording the instruments. Joel Brandenstein attached importance to only playing instruments instead of synthetically produced sounds.

Taka Chanaiwa played acoustic guitar, electric guitar and piano for the album. Sebastian "Ray" Strahl also played the piano. Kai Oliver Krug appeared as a background singer and played bass, electric guitar and piano. Furthermore, Krug took over the string arrangements. The strings were recorded by the Nayon Han Ensemble. While Nayon Han played the cello, Ikki Opitz and Elias Schödel contributed violins. Michael Grabinger and Lars Friedrich took over the drums. Grabinger was also used on the percussion. Ronith also played Mues' harp.

criticism

Emma Schmidt describes the album in a review as “ acceptable. "Joel Brandenstein's story from industrial clerk to successful musician is" like a modern fairy tale. “The main themes on emotions are love and“ heartbreak ”. Brandenstein suffered, mourned and wanted " a time machine so that he could make up for his mistakes ". The “ ballad density ” is accordingly very high and the pieces are “ sometimes dramatic ('Polaroid'), then again gently decorated with strings ('Welcome'). "In addition, Brandenstein sprinkled" one or the other upbeat number. “In addition to the strings, the piano is particularly present on the songs. These “ simple piano melodies ” represent “ the best thing about the record ”.

The Laut.de e-zine rated emotions with one of a possible five points. From the point of view of the editor Sven Kabelitz, “ Joel Brandenstein's Tchibo music [...] has the possibilities of variation of a stone. “The singer presses his“ voice with no echoes, scratchy between the vocal cords ”in order to“ sound as unadulterated as possible. “In this way,“ authenticity should arise through staging ”, which is a“ widespread misconception ”. Kabelitz also criticizes that “ each of the twelve songs, ten ballads carried by them, [...] begins in the same way ”. First of all, hypocrite a " lonely, restrained piano [...] intimacy. “Then“ Brandenstein timidly step in with his vocals ”, followed by drums, which“ ultimately lead to the refrain ”. In summary, Brandenstein offers “ interchangeable service hits with meaningless emotional components. "
