Empty Glass is the second solo album by Pete Townshend and was released on May 10, 1980 on the ATCO label. The album, produced by Chris Thomas , was recorded at Pete Townshend's Eel Pie Studios and AIR Studios in London.

Emergence

Pete Townshend had already released two albums outside of his activities with The Who before Empty Glass . The first album was released in 1972 under the title Who Came First and contained, among other things, a series of demo recordings Townshends, which were made as part of the Lifehouse project, which was later not realized. In 1977 Rough Mix was released, a collaboration with Ronnie Lane . Empty Glass was, in a way, Pete Townshend's first real solo album, as he wrote the tracks specifically for this album and this time didn't hold back what he thought was his best material as a possible Who album. Roger Daltrey later complained that Townshend had withheld songs such as Rough Boys for his solo project and not for Face Dances , the first Who album without Keith Moon released a year later.

The songs for the album came at a difficult time for The Who and Pete Townshend. On September 7, 1978, Keith Moon , the group's drummer, had died and the band had decided to replace him with Kenney Jones . In 1979 the group gave concerts in Europe and the United States, with a crowd at the entrance of the concert hall before a concert in Cincinnati in December 1979 , in which eleven people died.

Townshend dedicated the album to his wife Karen, but Rough Boys dedicated the album to his daughters Emma and Minta and the Sex Pistols .
