The Emsland-Gymnasium is a grammar school in the Westphalian Rheine .

history

The Emsland-Gymnasium was founded in 1853 as a higher school for girls, which provided education to around the middle school . The school was given the name "Emslandschule" in 1938, when a high school diploma was taken here for the first time . After the girls' schools in the area, which were church-sponsored (Ahaus, Grafschaft Bentheim , Lingen, Steinfurt and Tecklenburg), had been closed by the National Socialists, it was the only facility where girls could get their Abitur.

Since its 100th anniversary in 1953, the school has had a cog in its logo and the colors of the city of Rheine. In 1972 it became a high school for boys and girls. Since then, the southern part of the Emsland district has been an integral part of the school's catchment area. In 2003 the school celebrated its 150th anniversary with numerous events in which prominent guests took part.

school-building

The school received a modern building in 1979. A total of ten subject rooms are available for the natural sciences. The offer is complemented by music and art rooms, a language workshop and a modern media center, as well as a cafeteria and a secretariat.

Stumbling blocks

In Rheine, the first stumbling blocks were set on April 21, 2004 by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig at the Dionysianum grammar school and the Emsland grammar school. The students in grade 10 of the school and the Abiturientia 2004 paid the costs for the stumbling blocks. They are intended to commemorate two former Jewish classmates who were killed by the National Socialists.
