Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception ( EBR ) is a biblical reference work that has been published since 2009, which pays special attention to the reception of the Bible in Judaism and Christianity.

meaning

The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception is published by Walter de Gruyter . Its unique selling point is the programmatic, detailed treatment of the reception history, which is already mentioned in the title. The EWC thus fills a gap between purely biblical reference works such as the Anchor Bible Dictionary and the Theological Dictionary on the Old Testament on the one hand and theological reference works such as the Lexicon for Theology and Church or the Theological Real Encyclopedia on the other. Rudolf Smend called the list of editors and editors in his review of the first two volumes “completely international, interdisciplinary, interdenominational and cross-directional. It also shows impressively how little can be said of a European, German and Christian dominance in these fields and how easily English has become the general language of science here too ”.

editor

There are separate main editors for five subject areas, who have already changed positions in the first ten years. There are currently two main editors for the Hebrew Bible and one for each of the other subject areas.

In addition to the main editors, there are around 30 specialist editors ( Area Editors ) and now well over 1000 authors.

Frequency of publication

The Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception is published by Walter de Gruyter in parallel in print and online. The online edition contains the articles in html text as well as the option to download the individual articles in the print layout. In the print edition there are 16 picture panels with illustrations and maps that are missing in the online edition.
