The end of the line in Venice is the second novel by crime writer Donna Leon . It was released in 1993 under the original title Death in a Strange Country . The German version was published in a translation by Monika Elwenspoek in 1995 by Diogenes Verlag . Parts of the novel are set on a US base similar to the one where the author herself worked as a literature professor for 14 years.

One morning in Venice the body of a man who was stabbed to death is recovered. It is an American named Foster stationed at the US base in Vicenza . A few days later, the base doctor Terry Peters was found dead. Heroin overdose is reported to be the cause of death . Brunetti finds out that she was Foster's lover.

Before her death, Peters sent Brunetti a magazine containing an account of a boy with a rash caused by the chemical PCB . Captain Peters and Sergeant Foster have investigated this substance and found that it is illegally stored by an Italian entrepreneur along with other toxic waste on Lake Barcis north of Venice . With a lot of money involved, it appears that Foster and Peters died. Brunetti's father-in-law Conte Orazio Fallieri takes care of the toxic waste dump and can arrange for it to be lifted. However, Brunetti suspects that the garbage is not disposed of properly, but is simply dumped elsewhere.

In 2006, the film adaptation of the novel, with Uwe Kockisch , Julia Jäger , Christel Peters , Ueli Jäggi and Michael Degen as permanent staff, and Heiner Lauterbach , Esther Schweins , Katharina Schubert and Monica Bleibtreu in episode roles, appeared with prominent supporting roles .
