Engelbert Johann Matthias Carel Röntgen (born September 30, 1829 in Deventer ; † December 12, 1897 in Leipzig ) was a German-Dutch violinist and concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra .

Life

Engelbert Röntgen was born in Deventer as the son of the German businessman Johann Engelbert Röntgen and the Dutchwoman Carolina Huijser. At the age of 19 he went to study with Ferdinand David at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1850 he became a member of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and after the death of Raimund Dreyschock (1824–1869) took over his position as second concertmaster. After the death of long-time concert master Ferdinand David (1810–1873) he was finally his successor. He is the dedicatee of the Violin Concerto in A major, op. 68 by Ferdinand Thieriot .

family

His wife Pauline Röntgen b. Klengel (born June 28, 1831 in Leipzig, † July 25, 1888 there) was a pianist and came from the renowned Leipzig musician family Klengel. Her father Moritz Klengel was a violinist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the brother of the cellist Julius Klengel . The couple had three children:

  • Johanna Röntgen (1857).
  • Caroline Röntgen (1860–1936), who married the sculptor Arthur Trebst .
  • Julius Röntgen (1855–1932), who lived as a pianist and composer in the Netherlands.

Röntgen was related to the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen .
