The Engelhörner are a mountain range about four kilometers long with numerous peaks at the northern end of the Bernese Alps . The Reichenbachtal lies to the northwest and the Urbachtal to the southeast .
The largest peaks are the Gstellihorn ( 2854.7 m above sea level ), the Grosse Engelhorn ( 2782 m above sea level ), the Urbachsengelhorn ( 2767 m above sea level ) and the Hohjegiburg ( 2639 m above sea level ). . The Urbachsengelhorn, with its 1,900 meter high east face, drops directly onto the valley floor of the Urbach Valley - at a horizontal distance of approx. 1,250 meters.
The angel horns belong to the Helvetic mantle of the Aarmassiv and consist mainly of light chalk limestone . Only the summit of the Gstellihorn is made of Innertkirchen granite and is therefore part of the Aar massif itself. From 1870, the limestone climbing around the Kingwand became popular with alpinists.
Since 1951, the Engelhorn has been accessible through the Engelhornhütte of the Academic Alpine Club Bern (AACB), which is located at its northwestern foot . It can be reached from Rosenlaui in 1 ½ hours.
