Rosenlaui is the name of a small village and pass station in the Reichenbachtal in the area of the community of Schattenhalb in the Bernese Oberland . It is located at 1328  m above sea level. M. below the Rosenlauigletscher .

geography

Rosenlaui is located in the middle of the Rosenlau Valley, on the pass road over the Grosse Scheidegg and is the penultimate inhabited village. The last one is the Schwarzwaldalp . Rosenlaui is considered the smallest town in Switzerland and, with its historic hotel, is reminiscent of the early days of tourism in Switzerland.

history

The late medieval - early modern mule and pass path over the Grosse Scheidegg enabled the livestock and dairy farming of the Lütschinen valleys to connect to the export route over the Grimsel pass to Italy. The private Rosenlauialp is managed in the Rosenlaui.

At the end of the 18th century, the first inns were opened on the Saumweg, and thanks to travel reports, paintings and engravings they became world-famous. Writers and scholars such as Karl Viktor von Bonstetten , Jakob Samuel Wyttenbach and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe discovered and described the natural beauties of the Reichenbach Valley with the snow-covered mountains, the Rosenlaui Glacier and the Rosenlaui Gorge . With the onset of tourism, a visit to the valleys "in the Grindelwald" became an integral part of a so-called "Swiss trip".

In 1788, the herdsman Andreas von Bergen received a concession for a bathing establishment for the sulfur spring he discovered in 1771. The Rosenlauibad developed into a Belle Époque spa and tourist hostel in the 19th century . After the fire in the inn, the Kurhaus Rosenlaui was built in 1862 , later expanded and supplemented with the Art Nouveau hotel in 1904 . The Rosenlaui hydropower plant, which supplies the hotel and Rosenlauischlucht with electricity, was built in 1898. In 1912 a landslide destroyed the spring catchment. The Rosenlauibad has been connected to the Haslital by a road since the beginning of the 20th century.

Rosenlaui hit the headlines around the world in 1946 when the rescue teams left for the American Douglas DC-3 that crashed on the Gauli Glacier .

In 1966 a post bus route was opened up to the top of the pass and since 1979 it has been continuously from Grindelwald to Meiringen.

The origin of the name Rosenlaui is derived from the old German "ross", for tearing and the Haslide German "laui", for avalanche and means raging avalanche.

Tourism and alpinism

Rosenlaui became the starting point for hikes, high mountain and climbing tours (Engelhörner) and a training center for civil and military training in glaciers, high mountains and climbing. It is the starting point for the approaches to the high alpine Dossenhütte with crossings to the Gauli and Glecksteinhütte , the Engelhornhütte ( 1901  m above sea level ) in the climbing area of the Engelhorns , the Brochhütte ( 1499  m above sea level ) for hiking and ski tours and the Naturfreundehaus Reutsperre ( 1272  m above sea level ).

There are many hiking routes, such as the Bergahornweg and the circular hike to the Kaltenbrunner Hochmoor , the highest moor in Europe.

It is the namesake and training location for the mountaineering institute Rosenlaui founded by Arnold Glatthard (today mountaineering school Rosenlaui ), the first mountaineering school in Switzerland. From 1954 Indian and Nepalese Sherpas were trained as mountain guides here, including Tenzing Norgay , who later became the first to climb Mount Everest .
