Yekosofati Atoke Engur
Yekosofati Atoke Engur (* 1920 in Langi District, † February 13, 1977 in the State Research Bureau Center Nakasero , Kampala ) was a Ugandan politician and ambassador .
Life
Yekosofati Atoke Engur's mother was the sister of Milton Obote 's father . Yekosofati Atoke Engur married Betty (* 1938); her sons were Ayo and Robeson Bennazoo Otim Engur (* April 1960 in Lira Hospital).
Yokosafati Atoke Engur attended Ibuje P7 Primary School, then Boroboro Secondary School in Gulu. From 1942 to 1944 he attended Nyakasura High School in Kabarole District . from 1945 to 1947 he trained as a pharmacy dispenser ( pharmaceutical-commercial employee ) at the Mulago Hospital in Lira.
In 1941 he was an interpreter in the District Commissioner's office in Lira. From 1948 to 1951 he was a pharmacy dispenser in a pharmacy of the Uganda Protectorate . In 1951 he was a founding member of the Federation of African Uganda Farmers . In 1952, after being encouraged by Ignatius Musazi, he was a founding member and chairman of the Uganda National Congress in Langi. In 1959 he was a founding member and chairman of the Uganda People's Congress in Langi. In 1956 and from 1957 to 1959 he was a political prisoner of the Uganda Protectorate . From 1960 to 1964 he was Won Nyaci (Paramount Chief) of the Lango District.
From October 1, 1964 to May 1971, he was ambassador to Moscow . From 1969 he was also High Commissioner in New Delhi .
Idi Amin carried out a coup against Milton Obote on January 25, 1971 . He was invited to participate in the formation of the government. Yekosofati Atoke Engur alternately accepted the offer and became Minister of Culture and Community Development , allowing Obote to stay in Nairobi .
On October 10, 2010, Yoweri Museveni posthumously awarded Engur, alongside Milton Obote, an Independence Medal in recognition of their contribution to the struggle for Uganda to be independent from the British.
