Enrico Baj (born October 31, 1924 in Milan , † June 16, 2003 in Vergiate ) was an Italian painter , sculptor , art theorist and anarchist .

Life

Baj was born into a wealthy family, but left Milan in 1944 because he had entered into conflicts with the state authorities and also did not want to do conscription in the fascist army. Baj graduated from the Law School of Milan University and the Brera Academy of Fine Arts . In 1951 he founded an artist group against nuclear war with Sergio Dangelo . Baj was editor of the "Movimento Nucleare", the "Manifesto della pittura nucleare" and the "Contro lo Stile" as well as (with Jorn) the magazine "Il Gesto". He promoted the anarchist movement all his life and died in 2003 in Vergiate, Italy.

Baj was one of the few representatives of the Italian avant-garde. Many of his works show an almost obsessive preoccupation with nuclear war . He created prints, sculptures and above all collages . He showed closeness to Surrealism and Dadaism and was later associated with Pop Art . His written works are assigned to the avant-garde . He worked with Umberto Eco and others. He had been a member of the Collège de 'Pataphysique since the mid-1960s , made significant contributions to its activities and publications and was elevated to the rank of transcendent satrap in 2002, just like Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst before him. His best known work is a series of " Generals "; absurdly overdrawn figures made from objet trouvé such as belts and medals.

In 1972, the exhibition of one of his major works, Funerali dell'anarchico Pinelli (Funeral of the Anarchist Pinelli ) was banned after the murder of a police officer who was held responsible for Pinelli's death. The picture is a tribute to Carlo Carrà's famous painting Funerali dell'anarchico Galli . Baj's work remained political. In his last years he created a series of protests against the election of Silvio Berlusconi .
